What is Laser Therapy?

Laser therapy light is infra-red electro-magnetic energy entering the body as photons. It uses specific wavelengths of light to safely and painlessly help to reduce pain, inflammation and swelling and to promote healing.

Tissues targeted are stimulated to increase producion of a cellular enzyme (Cytochrome C Oxidase) that is crucial to the production of ATP.

ATP is the currency of chemical energy in living cells. With increased ATP production and thus greater cellular energy a host of biologicial responses are facilitated, such as mediation of pain, reduction of inflammation, reduced scar tissue, increased cell metabolism, improved vascular activity, and accelerated healing.

This is the photo-chemical effect of High Power Laser Therapy.

Laser therapy involves directing light energy into inflamed or damaged tissue to accelerate the body’s natural healing process. The laser is placed in direct contact with the skin which enables specific wavelengths of light to penetrate the tissue and interact with molecules within the cells to cause several biochemical effects.

Laser therapy can be carried out on most people including children.

However, laser may be contraindicated in those who:

  • Have cancer
  • Are under the age of 16 and the area to be treated is over a growth plate (assessment can be given).
  • Are pregnant

If you’re unsure if laser is safe or appropriate for you, please get in touch.

  • Verrucae (plantar warts)
  • Heel pain (plantar fasciitis)
  • Fungal toenails (Evidence for fungal nails is limited)
  • Achilles tendon pain
  • Haematoma (bruising) and swelling
  • Nerve Pain

Generally, we recommend 3-6 sessions. Often acute conditions respond more quickly than chronic problems.

Your podiatrist will explain the risks and alternative treatments.
